Community Canvas is an initiative presented by The Culture Show where GBH features artwork from community members on our Digital Mural.
Today’s mural, Staying Afloat by Ruth Scotch, plays with the color of light, reflection, and distortion. This painting is from her pool series, in which she attended a weeklong residency on an island in Maine to paint residents posing in the water.
The single figure in a pool evokes a sense of calm, peace, and serenity. The painting is created predominantly using a palette knife, so it has a visually arresting sense of texture.
