Community Canvas is an initiative presented by The Culture Show where GBH features artwork from community members on our Digital Mural.
Today’s mural, Nuevo año, nueva yo (New Year, new you) by Missy Arellano, is an analog collage on paper with acrylic markers. Through this piece, Arellano processes the emotions of her brother’s passing in 2017. She grapples with the notion that time is fleeting, but also healing.
“I want viewers to walk away with a different idea of grief and time,” Arellano says. “Grief doesn’t have a fixed time frame in which we magically wake up and feel better. All I can do is work on myself. Day by day, I will continue. I will survive.”
Missy holds a B.A. in Art History and French from California State University, Long Beach, a M.P.A. from the University of Southern California, and an Ed.M. from Harvard Graduate School of Education.
