Community Canvas is an initiative presented by The Culture Show where GBH features artwork from community members on our Digital Mural.
Today’s mural features a sheep painting by Carolyn Letvin. She’s been painting Jacob sheep since 2001. Since then, her paintings evolved and eliminated any identifiable background. The flat color accentuates the negative space of the composition.
“Sheep are often one of the first images we see in our lives,” Letvin says, “One of my very first memories is of painted wooden cut-outs of Little Bo Peep and her sheep that hung above my crib. I believe that this formative vision is why these alluring creatures became my muse.”
