Community Canvas is an initiative presented by The Culture Show where GBH features artwork from community members on our Digital Mural.
Today’s mural is a painting by Eliana Soares. The woman in the portrait is her grandmother, Vovó Dunda. She was a strong woman who raised five of her own children as well as many grandchildren. Soares wasn’t able to visit her often since she lived in Cabo Verde, an archipelago off the western coast of Africa.
This is the birthplace of Soares’s father and the location of many fond childhood memories from her visits. Although she hasn’t been to Cabo Verde in a while, she looks forward to traveling there in the future and learning more about her culture.
“I think my Vovó Dunda’s passing was most difficult for my father,” Soares says. “I gave him this painting in hopes that her spirit would continue to be a light in his life, reminding him of her love.”
