Community Canvas is an initiative presented by The Culture Show where GBH features artwork from community members on our Digital Mural.
Today’s mural features artwork from Sarah Slavick’s Elegy to the Underground series, which explores recent discoveries about latticed fungi or mycorrhizal networks. Trees are not simply individual entities, but instead part of a much larger, complex system through a vast network of roots.
“These new discoveries of the hidden life of trees suggest new metaphors for our survival and how we should act to protect our home and our species,” Slavick says.
Slavick is a professor at Lesley University College of Art and Design. Her studio is in the Bates Art Center in South End, Boston.
