Community Canvas is an initiative presented by The Culture Show where GBH features artwork from community members on our Digital Mural.

Today’s mural by Vanessa Irzyk is a culmination of loosely obsessive mark making. The objective is to pull the viewer in to see each brushstroke in affiliation with its intricate cut.

“Both the painting and cutting process feels zen, although meticulous and monotonous,” Irzyk says. “The repetitive motion and tedious process is comforting, and allows me to push myself ever-so-slightly into inventing new shapes and angles.”

Irzyk’s work focuses on geometric shapes shifting in space. She uses a combination of intricate meditative pattern making, bold gradations, planes, and washes of color to compose a transformative space.
