Community Canvas is an initiative presented by The Culture Show where GBH features artwork from community members on our Digital Mural.

Today’s mural by Emily Shedlock is a portrait that explores shadow work, a type of psychotherapy meant to expose and confront the parts of ourselves that we repress in an effort to develop true self-acceptance.

“Silhouettes are painted alongside my subjects, representing our innermost emotional complexities or shadow selves,” Shedlock says. “I challenge the viewer to also claim the shadow as their own to perceive the subject in a more curious and empathetic light.”

Shedlock is a figurative artist based in Boston, MA. She received a B.F.A. in interior design with a minor in fine arts from The New England School of Art and Design at Suffolk University in 2016.
