Community Canvas is an initiative presented by The Culture Show where GBH features artwork from community members on our Digital Mural.
Today’s mural features photography by Kristen Joy Emack. She has photographed her daughter and nieces for over a decade, capturing the lives of girls, and their innocent, confident relationships to themselves, their world, and one another, featured in her book Cousins.
“I hope when my daughter and nieces look back on this work, they’ll see their beauty, their devotion to each other, and find themselves here, in this work we made together, reflected with love,” says Emack.
Emack’s award-winning work has been shown nationally and internationally, in both galleries and photo festivals, and has been published in magazines including Vogue Italia, OATH, The Horn Book, and The Sun. A 2022 Guggenheim Fellow, Emack is also a public school educator who lives and works in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
