On this date in 1777 the U.S. flag was formally adopted by resolutiom of the Second Continental Congress:
“Resolved, That the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.”
The design has developed over the years with a new star for every state added to the union.
