“Old Hickory” gets a reinvention in this excellent production that moves from Jackson’s humble beginnings on the Tennessee frontier to his days as Commander-in-Chief. But there’s a twist — an “emo-rock” score sets the tone for an irreverent presentation of America’s first maverick president, who kicked British butt, shafted the Indians and smacked down the Spaniards, all in the name of these United States. An assist from fantastic costume and staging makes this show pop, so catch it at the SpeakEasy Stage Company through Nov. 17 at the Calderwood Pavilion.
Based on the poignantly optimistic autobiographical writings of journalist Mark O’Brien, “The Sessions” tells the story of a man who lived most of his life in an iron lung and is determined — at age 38 — to lose his virginity. With the help of his therapist and the guidance of his priest, O’Brien sets out to make his dream a reality. With an excellent cast and heartwarming romance, you can bet on seeing “The Sessions,” which hits theaters Oct. 26, mentioned at the next Academy Awards.
