FRONTLINE’s For Sama reveals the toll of the Syrian war through the unforgettable perspective of a young mother. The film is an intimate yet epic journey into Waad al-Kateab’s experience of love, motherhood and survival during the Syrian conflict. Over the course of five years during the uprising in rebel-held Aleppo, Waad got married and gave birth to Sama, all while fighting for her dream of a free Syria and filming the human suffering around her. Her camera captures incredible stories of loss, laughter and survival as Waad wrestles with an impossible choice – whether or not to flee the city to protect her daughter’s life, when leaving means abandoning the struggle for freedom for which she has already sacrificed so much. For Sama has won numerous festival awards including Best Documentary at Cannes and SXSW.
For Sama is produced by Channel 4 News/ITN Productions for Channel 4 and WGBH/FRONTLINE. For Sama airs Tuesday, November 19 on WGBH.
