GBH Drama

  • Winter is here (allegedly — as a snow loving Boston resident, I’m miffed) and so is a drama fan favorite holiday tradition: the Call The Midwife Holiday Special! I’m here to recap the show just in case you missed it, or just couldn’t get enough of our favorite nurses, nuns, and other assorted denizens of Poplar.
  • Archie is BritBox’s newest limited series focused on exploring Cary Grant’s life beyond the lights of Old Hollywood. Grant’s real name before he adopted his stage name was Archibald “Archie” Leach. He created the suave upper-class British gentleman persona to escape childhood trauma and to ease the struggle to climb the acting ladder. Once the cameras were off, these early troubles affected his real-life marriages and relationships.
  • GBH Drama spoke to The Sixth Commandment creator and writer Sarah Phelps and director Saul Gibb about their creative process, their approach to responsibly handling and depicting trauma, and why the story resonates with audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. This interview has been edited for length and clarity.
  • In the Season 2 finale of Annika, the Marine Homicide Unit investigates a barge fire tied to two previous cases that occurred offscreen. In the process, we also discover why Papa Strandhed sought to reconnect with Annika. Morgan, meanwhile, has to navigate change on three fronts. While the season finale resolves the biggest question viewers had from the beginning of this season, it leaves viewers with a new one left unresolved. Let’s dive into more detail.
  • The Season 2 finale of World On Fire portrays our ensemble of characters making decisions that will change the course of their lives and what role they will play in the ongoing war effort. Although the audience knows how the war ends, our characters face an uncertain future and that is reflected in the last minutes of the episode. Let’s discuss what choices all of the characters made.
  • This week on Annika, we finally meet Papa Strandhed and find out some of the reasons why Annika’s relationship with her dad is so strained. He suggests doing some family bonding at the same eco-friendly resort where Morgan is doing her work experience. Unfortunately, the family bonding session is interrupted by Annika finding a dead body in the stream. Her monologue repeatedly references the Shakespearian tragedy King Lear. Let’s take a look at why.
  • This week on World On Fire, Rommel’s forces in North Africa directly attack Rajib, Harry, and Stan’s unit. Kasia realizes through her mission from Sir James that some of her fellow Polish refugees are sending intelligence back to the Nazis. One of Lois’ patients reminds her of the life she left behind. Meanwhile, let’s look at what’s happening in occupied France with David and Henriette.
  • This week on Annika, the Marine Homicide Unit is in a transition period. The police assign Harper from the Edinburgh investigation in Episode 2 to the unit as Tyrone has started his new job. (Unfortunately for fans of Ukweli Roach, his new show Wolf is not available in America yet.) Blair is now on office duty as her due date approaches. The rest of the team is sent to the islands of Jura and Islay in the Scottish Hebrides as there are no police stations there to investigate a murder victim found frozen in a block of ice. Annika still has to negotiate working with Michael while someone else from her past reappears to upset the balance of her life. Let’s find out how George Orwell’s writings tie into Annika’s emotions — and the case.
  • This week on World on Fire, our characters are facing complications to their plans. David and Henriette are struggling to hide from French Nazi collaborators. Kasia begins working for James, and finds out she has to spy on fellow Polish expats who may be sending British secrets back to the Nazis. Marga is now pregnant and a prisoner confined to bed rest. Harry and Stan are ordered to assist the Australian troops in defending Tobruk from General Romnel’s advancing forces. Let’s take a closer look at how the British Indian Army unit has to survive more than the desert heat in this episode as well as across the season.
  • Annika’s monologue references Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case Of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde throughout the episode. It’s very convenient that the name of the deceased billionaire is Fabian Hyde. The plot doesn’t appear to be specifically about Halloween, so let’s unpack why the classic gothic horror story is crucial to the episode.
