Which high school will earn bragging rights as the brightest in Massachusetts? Watch the top teams in the state go head to head to claim the top prize in the 10th anniversary of High School Quiz Show, WGBH’s single-elimination academic tournament.

This year’s competition is full of surprises, starting with newcomer Boston Latin School’s upset of two-time winner Lexington High School, a veteran of five Quiz Show finals. Repeat contender South High Community School, representing Worcester and Central Massachusetts, ousted Mystic Valley Regional Charter School’s mostly female all-junior team in the quarterfinal round.

Defending champions Andover High School knocked off their neighbors from Westford Academy in the season’s third match. Andover will now face Thayer Academy in the quarterfinals.

There’s a new contest every Saturday at 6pm on WGBH 2, with episodes repeating every Sunday at 10am and 5pm. Winning teams will move to the quarterfinal round.

Upcoming matchups include:

March 2 – Brookline High School vs. Somerville High School
March 9 – Amesbury High School vs. Hingham High School
March 16 – Belmont High School vs. Needham High School
March 23 – Acton-Boxborough Regional High School vs. Advanced Math and Science Academy

On March 30, Boston Latin School and South High Community School will face off for a spot in the semifinals.

This season, High School Quiz Show is pleased to welcome Jeff Kinney, author of Diary of a Wimpy Kid, as its first guest host to sit in for Billy Costa, who was unable to attend the tapings for episodes five through 14. A resident of Plainville, Massachusetts, Kinney is a longtime fan and supporter of the WGBH show: He competed as a contestant on High School Quiz Show: Celebrity Edition on Season Three where he tested his knowledge against other local celebrities. In Season Five, he appeared in a special video segment, posing a question to the contestants. In 2018, he co-developed and hosted High School Quiz Show: Extra Credit, a non-televised version of the show and will host the event a second time at his Plainville bookstore, An Unlikely Story, on Saturday, March 16.

“Hosting High School Quiz Show was an exhilarating, once-in-a-lifetime experience,” Kinney said. “It was an honor being a part of a program that celebrates some of the brightest students in Massachusetts. I’ll look forward to tracking their progress as they reach higher and higher heights.”

The High School Quiz Show championship will air on Saturday, May 11, and the winning team will move on to represent Massachusetts in the Interstate Invitational against the champions from Maine, Rhode Island and New Hampshire. The Interstate Invitational premieres on Saturday, May 18, with final airing on Saturday, May 25.
