Ulrike Welsch

Photojournalist

Born and educated in Germany, Ms. Welsch arrived in 1964 in the USA. In Germany, she was a trained druggist-chemist where she specialized in Photography. In America, she became the first female staff photographer at the Boston Herald Traveler (1966-71) and at the Boston Globe (1971-81). 1975 : Ms Welsch was named “Press Photographer of the Year” by the New England Press Photographers Assoc. She and the Boston Globe Team received a Pulitzer Prize for their coverage of Boston Busing. Her Human Interest images changed the looks of Boston dailies. 1981 : She became a Freelance Photographer and traveled internationally. The same year, she participated in the project "A Day in the Life of Australia". She also lectured at the Center for Lifelong Learning, Harvard University (1977-1987). In 2019, Ms. Welsch received the LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD from the Boston Press Photographers Association. Ulrike Welsch exhibits and lectures throughout New England and resides North of Boston, Massachusetts.
