Tony Kushner

playwright, screenwriter

Tony Kushner is currently working on a screenplay about Abraham Lincoln, and given his track record, there is every reason to believe that it will simultaneously bring the man to life, investigate the myth, and produce a startling new way of understanding this most iconic figure in American history. Mr. Kushner is one of our most accomplished playwrights. The two-part epic, *Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes* (1990-1992), brought him to national attention, and his other plays include *Slavs!* (1996); *Homebody/Kabul* (2002); and *Caroline or Change* (2004), the musical for which he wrote book and lyrics. A prolific writer, Mr. Kushner is also a noted translator and screenwriter, whose credits include Steven Spielberg's *Munich* as well as Mike Nichols's film version of *Angels in America*. He has won every major theater award, including the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, two Tony awards, three Obie awards, and the London Drama Critics' Circle Award and has been recognized outside of the theater as well for his contributions to television, film, and the arts, and his activism relating to social justice, gay and lesbian life, and Jewish-American issues.
