Leah Ward Sears, appointed in 1992 by Governor Zell Miller, D-GA, was the first woman in the state to hold the position of chief justice and believed to be the first African American woman to become chief justice of any state supreme court in the US. Sears is also the youngest person ever to be appointed to the Georgia Supreme Court.
