Julie Guthman, Ph. D.

Professor of Social Sciences, UC Santa Cruz

Dr. Julie Guthman focuses her research on sustainable agriculture and alternative food movements, international political economy of food and agriculture, politics of obesity, environmental health, political ecology, race and food, critical nutrition, and critical human geography. Guthman is a Radcliffe Fellow and a Guggenheim Fellow in the 2017-2018 season. She is the author of the widely praised \_Weighing In: Obesity, Food Justice, and the Limits of Capitalism\_. Dr. Guthman's book awards include the Frederick H. Buttel Outstanding Scholarly Achievement Award from the Rural Sociological Society for Agrarian Dreams: The Paradox of Organic Farming in California (University of California Press, 2004) and the ASFS Book Award for Weighing In: Obesity, Food Justice, and the Limits of Capitalism(University of California Press, 2011).
