Gary Mott

Radio Production Director

Gary Mott oversees the team of audio engineers behind 89.7s signature sound. His staff resides at the audio consoles for GBH’s flagship programming, including Morning Edition, The Curiosity Desk, The Culture Show, All Things Considered, and Boston Public Radio. He also manages the audio engineering team for The World from PRX — the international news program produced at GBH for American audiences — and handles GBH News's post-production requirements by training reporters and producers on audio collection and best practices.

Throughout his long career at GBH, Gary was an early pioneer of the podcast format as Associate Producer of GBH Morning Stories, which was featured in the July 2005 launch of Apple's iTunes Podcast Directory. He has produced national and regional radio series and specials, including Sound & Spirit with Ellen Kushner, NPR's Says You!, and A Christmas Celtic Sojourn with Brian O'Donovan. Additionally, he has led multi-platform initiatives — ranging from building a virtual music studio in Second Life to preserving an online archive of a unique radio broadcast of the 1963 March on Washington.

Outside of public media, Gary taught Advanced Field Recording and Audio Documentary at Boston University's Center for Digital Imaging Arts in the College of Communication. He holds a B.A. in English and Speech Communications from North Park University in Chicago and an M.A. in Mass Communication from Emerson College in Boston.
