D. Stephen Long

professor of ethics, Southern Methodist University

D. Stephen Long is Cary M. Maguire University Professor of Ethics at Southern Methodist University. He previously taught at Marquette University 2007-2015, Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary 1998-2007, and St. Joseph’s University, Philadelphia 1995-1998. He served as director of continuing education at Duke Divinity School 1990-1995. He received a bachelor’s degree from Taylor University and master’s and PhD from Duke. He works in the intersection between theology and ethics and has published over fifty essays and twenty books including "Divine Economy: Theology and the Market"; "Christian Ethics: Very Short Introduction"; "The Perfectly Simple Triune God"; "Augustinian and Ecclesial Christian Ethics"; and "A Theological Economy: The Legacies of Adam Smith and St. Paul" (T & T Clark, forthcoming 2027). He is ordained in the United Methodist Church and served churches in Roatan, Honduras, Apex, North Carolina, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and regularly preaches and presides in Dallas.
