Andrew Lam

Author and journalist

Andrew Lam is a Vietnamese American author and journalist who has written about the Overseas Vietnamese experience.

Born Lâm Quang Dũng in 1964 in South Vietnam, he is the son of General Lâm Quang Thi. Lam left Vietnam during the fall of Saigon in 1975 and later attended the University of California, Berkeley, majoring in biochemistry before switching to creative writing at San Francisco State University. He won the Outstanding Young Journalist Award from the Society of Professional Journalists in 1993.

Lam was featured in the PBS documentary My Journey Home (2004) and was a John S. Knight Journalism Fellow at Stanford University (2001–2002). He received the PEN/Beyond Margins Award in 2006 for Perfume Dreams. Though private about his sexuality, he participated in a 2009 interview for a collection of portraits of homosexual Americans.
