The recount for the open House seat to represent parts of Taunton and Easton concluded with the Democrat who originally claimed victory holding on to her win, though by a slightly smaller margin.

Democrat Lisa Field, who was 21 votes ahead of Republican Larry Quintal based on preliminary results, lost seven votes during the recount, but retained her lead.

Secretary of State William Galvin’s office reported just after 3 p.m. Wednesday that Field received 2,575 votes to Quintal’s 2,560. Field will soon represent the Third Bristol District, after the seat was left empty when former Rep. Carol Doherty died in February.

“Based on the results of the recount, it appears that Lisa M. Field of Taunton has been elected,” Deb O’Malley, director of communications in Galvin’s office, wrote in an email.

Field has been the associate director of the legislative division of the nurses union since 2016, and has had a long career as a labor activist. She also worked as a steward at Fitchburg State University for AFSCME Local 1067, president of AFSCME Local 1067, staff representative at AFSCME Council 93, as well as other positions.

“Here’s one thing you can always count on me to do: represent every person in this district — whether you’re a resident of Easton or Taunton, whether you supported me or didn’t,” Field wrote in a message thanking voters on her Facebook page. “I know that we can accomplish so much together.”

Among the priorities on her campaign website, she lists addressing cost of living through cutting property and sales taxes, and holding utilities accountable for price hikes; supporting first-time homebuyers; eliminating the renter broker fee; and expanding vocational education seats.

In a Facebook post, Quintal said the results were “in the margin of error” and said “we are looking at all options.”

“Since election night, the difference has gone from 21 votes to 19 votes to 17 voters to 16 votes to 15 votes,” he wrote in a message to voters on his Facebook page. “In Easton, 16 ballots were mixed in with the override ballots and 10 mail in ballots signatures did not match the application. In Taunton, the city received 20 ballots after the election. These ballots are NOT being counted, which I find very disappointing that these people will not have their voice heard.”

With Field in the Third Bristol seat, the House will inch up to 134 Democrats, 25 Republicans and one unrolled representative.
