A federal judge just tossed out a new map of voting districts that the Boston City Council created last year, saying it placed undue emphasis on race while failing to consider other key factors. That alone would be newsworthy — but the legal fight over redistricting also reflects a sharp divide on the council itself, where four relatively conservative white councilors routinely square off against a progressive majority comprised mostly of people of color.

Given this split, can the council create another map that passes legal muster in time for this year's council elections? And what does the ongoing fight over redistricting tell us about the politics of race in Boston right now? Adam Reilly is joined by Saraya Wintersmith, GBH News' City Hall correspondent, to discuss the legal principles involved and the fault lines the ongoing redistricting battle reveals.
