The New Hampshire primary became the first primary election in the nation in 1952. In that year's democratic primary, the winner, one Estes Kefauver — a senator for Tennessee — won against the man who would eventually become president of the United States, Harry S. Truman.
Kefauver won by creating the archetype of a longshot who would woe New Hampshire voters with a vengeance and then catch fire elsewhere. Seventy years later, they still holds resonance and significance for coming elections, but should they?
