In the span of a few days, Americans have grappled with the release of the Mueller reportand British Prime Minister Theresa May has struggled to win support for her Brexit plan. What connects those two events, says analyst Charles Sennott, is that both Brexit and the 2016 election were the targets of Russian meddling — and that neither the U.S. nor Great Britain have fully come to terms with what that means and how to stop it in the future.
Sennott, who is the founder of The GroundTruth Project and a WGBH news analyst, told Boston Public Radio on Monday that the two nations need to come together to prevent further Russian influence campaigns.
"There needs to be a global response to the dark trolling that's going on inside our democracies," Sennott said.
"The two oldest, and I would argue, strongest, democracies in the world were imperiled by Russian attacks. We need to wake up," he added.
Sennott said he believes that, in the wake of the Mueller report, House Democrats should focus on how to protect future U.S. elections.
"We've got to focus on that as the issue ahead, and the more Democrats can take the high road and focus on that, I think it will be better for the country," he said.
