Since late June, when Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez upset long-time Democratic incumbent Joe Crowley in New York's 14th district primary, all eyes have been on Massachusetts' 7th. The race pits Rep. Michael Capuano, who has served in Congress since 1999, against Boston City Councilor Ayanna Pressley — both Democrats who are arguing that they represent the direction the party needs to take in the age of President Donald Trump. The two have few policy differences. But, throughout the campaign, Capuano has stressed that his seniority will allow him to continue making progress for the people of Massachusetts. Pressley, an African-American woman, counters that Washington, D.C., needs the fresh perspective of someone willing to shake up the system.

With just a few days left before the Sept. 4 primary in Massachusetts, WGBH News hit the campaign trail with both the incumbent and challenger. On Wednesday, Aug. 29, Director of Photography Meredith Nierman spent the day with Councilwoman Pressley. On Thursday, Aug. 30, photographer Kayana Szymczak was with Rep. Capuano.
