Democrats had a strong showing in last night’s primary elections in New Jersey, New Mexico, Iowa, and even California — despite concerns that the state’s unusual primary system, where the top two vote-getters advance, would put them at a disadvantage.

Juliette Kayyem, homeland security expert and author of “Security Mom: My Life Protecting The Home and Homeland,”told Boston Public Radio that she believes the results are a sign of the Democratic Party’s strength ahead of the midterm elections.

“The worry was that because of the way you vote in California with its open primaries that no Democrat would get on the ballot — that they would all knock each other off, because there were so many Democrats running,” she said. “It’s a sign in and of itself that the party is attracting people to the ballot.”

Kayyem thinks this enthusiasm will translate into a “blue wave” of Democrats elected in November.

“Its hard for the polls to measure ... just how angry Democrats and progressives are, and how much more potentially tactical they are being in their voting,” Kayyem said.
