The Republican National Convention in Cleveland brought in an all-star line-up to rally the delegates and the public around Donald Trump’s VP pick, Indiana Governor Mike Pence. And WGBH’s Marilyn Schairer caught up with former Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown and asked him about the Trump/Pence ticket.

Marilyn Schairer:  With Trump, right, is he able to unify the party? Is this going to really happen, come November?

Scott Brown: Well, as you know, I was the first one to endorse him and I wouldn't have endorsed him if I didn't think he could win and the fact that you're seeing a tremendous amount of energy here... I think the unification has been happening, you know, ever since he won New Hampshire so we’ll see.

Marilyn Schairer: Some had said that perhaps you would have been a vice president pick. Had you heard that? Were you disappointed?

Scott Brown: No, I wasn't disappointed. It was an honor to be considered and, you know, my only goal is to make sure that we have a Republican in the White House. We keep the Senate and we obviously keep the House, that way we can push forth an agenda that actually makes sense.

Marilyn Schairer: What about with Hillary? There's been a lot of "Hillary-bashing" for a country to be looking at national television hearing some of them calling the Secretary of State, former Senator of New York a criminal, a liar.

Scott Brown: She is a liar. You know let's be real, I mean, the F.B.I. director said it so...all the mess that she's in right now was a result of her actions. It wasn't anything that you or me or anyone else did. She was caught and so that we can litigate that forever. I thought Chris Christie did an eloquent job yesterday. That being said, wait until next week. This is nothing, the Democrats have been hammering… you've got Elizabeth Warren hammering and just doing-making outrageous just you know... just terrible statements towards very accomplished people. And so it started long before today.

Marilyn Schairer: Do you think, though, that a Trump-Pence ticket can beat Hillary and whomever she'll announce on Friday ticket?

Scott Brown: Of course, of course, right now it's tied in the key battleground states; it’s within the margin of error in almost every state, of course. This just getting beginning, this is just getting started.

Marilyn Schairer: Is the party, though, with this convention now unified? There still seems to be a lot of faction —

Scott Brown: It doesn't matter if it's unified because we have other people outside the party who a participating in the process. All those good Southie Democrats, those Reagan Democrats, Quincy, Worcester, you know, you have Hyde Park, you have a lot of folks in those areas in Massachusetts and in New Hampshire you've got those blue collar workers who are just sitting on their rear ends because the governor of New Hampshire and this president have basically put them out of a job. So yeah, they're ready to play and they going to play on this side.

Marilyn Schairer: Are you surprised that Governor Baker is not here?

Scott Brown: No, no I'm not. Listen, Charlie has to take care of Charlie and he's doing a great job and I have a ton of respect for him and I don't expect Kelly Ayotte to be here either because she's got a reelection. But I'm hopeful that Charlie will actually re-evaluate, you know, the fact that he said he's not going to vote. Well I respect that, but that sends a terrible message to our youth and to the men and women who serve this great country to, you know, the sacrifices they made, you've got to vote. And the fact that Governor Pence is there, you know, he knows Governor Pence, he knows the stability that he's going to bring to this ticket. So I would ask him to, you know, just keep it to himself and get in there and do the right thing.

I'm hopeful that Charlie will actually re-evaluate, you know, the fact that he said he's not going to vote.

Marilyn Schairer:  So what would you encourage people in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and New England, why they should go out and vote for this ticket?

Scott Brown: Well because if you compare it to the Socialist ticket- Hillary Clinton has gone so far left she makes Bernie Sanders look like Rush Limbaugh.
