Generating little attention this year is the election for U.S. Senator in Massachusetts. Democratic incumbent Ed Markey faces former Hopkinton selectman, Republican Brian Herr.
Brian Herr has an uphill battle. He has virtually no name recognition, and little money. During the first and probably only debate, Herr went on the offensive. He attacked Markey for being an ineffectual leader.
“Mr. Markey hasn’t passed a piece of legislation under his name in 21 years," Herr said. "Its been since 1993, since Mr. Markey authored, sponsored and passed a piece of legislation."
Markey says that’s absolutely untrue.
“I am the author of the law which has put together an Alzheimer's project act to find a cure for Alzheimer's," he said. "I did that on a bipartisan basis, just in the last two years. To increase the fuel economy standards to 54.5 miles per gallon by the year 2026. I did that."
Markey says he’s had a hand in 506 laws.
The candidates disagreed on a lot of issues, including Ebola. Herr says there should be a travel ban to West African countries, while Markey says any strategy should be based strictly on public health recommendations.
