Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis will announce his plans to retire at a news conference Monday.
Police spokeswoman Cheryl Fiandaca said Davis will meet with the news media at 10AM on Monday to discuss his future plans. The commissioner gave his resignation to Mayor Thomas Menino Sunday.
Davis, 57, was appointed Boston’s top police officer by Menino in 2006. He previously served as the Lowell, Mass., superintendent of police.
Menino opted not to seek another term and Boston is poised to have a new mayor for the first time in two decades.
Davis’ departure comes just as the race to replace Menino kicks into high gear. A preliminary election on Tuesday, September 24 will whittle a dozen candidates down to two for the Nov. 5 election.
