What the Candidates Think
Obama: In March 2010, the president signed the Affordable Care Act, which the Democratic Party says aims to “[make] health care available to all Americans.” The Democratic Party reports , “Health reform will also lower costs for families and for businesses and for the federal government, reducing our deficit by more than $1 trillion in the next two decades alone.”
Romney: Gov. Mitt Romney says that he will take steps to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which he calls “Obamacare,” on “[his] first day in office.” In place of the act, Romney plans to “[return] states to their proper place in charge of regulating local insurance markets and caring for the poor, uninsured, and chronically ill.”
46% of Americans believe that the Affordable Care Act will hurt the economy. Only 37% believe it will help. (Gallup, July 2012).
