Police surveillance cameras are controversial. They can serve as an invaluable eye witness to a crime, but they can also be seen as a gross invasion of privacy. This familiar debate played out in Brookline when lawmakers voted to allow police officers to use newly available license plate scanning technology. Officers can now mount a camera to their cruiser that will virtually instantaneously scan and photograph the license plates on passing cars, and not everyone sees this as an advancement for public safety.
