Boston faced whiteout conditions Monday as a slow-moving blizzard transformed the landscape.
On the streets by Boston Common, the usual hum of traffic was replaced by the occasional growl of a snowplow.
A few people braved the whipping wind and snow, trekking on foot or gliding on skis.
On Boston Common, heavy snowfall, snow-laden trees and an occasional gust of wind created a “winter wonderland,” as Deb Blair put it.
For longtime resident Blair, this storm was less of a disruption than a celebration. Out for a walk with her husband, Charlie, and their dog, Freddy, the excitement was palpable.
“I couldn’t sleep. I was so excited,” Blair said, noting that despite 30 years in the city, the magic of a major snowfall never fades.
Only a handful of people ventured out, including hospital workers leaving their shifts, first responders heading to a call and city crews fighting a constant battle against the accumulation.
On Beacon Hill, dog owners pushed their way through mounds of snow to clear a path. Others braved the whiteout conditions simply for their morning fix of Dunkin’.
