An expanded Framingham Logan Express garage opened to passengers Thursday, just in time for Thanksgiving holiday travel.

Framingham is one of the busiest Logan Express shuttle locations, serving more than half a million riders in 2024. The old garage was frequently full, said Framingham City Councilor Michael Cannon.

Cannon uses the shuttle once a month for travel, and has been parking at the nearby Natick Mall during construction. He told GBH News he’ll be happy to take advantage of the upgrades when he uses the shuttle this weekend.

“It’ll be my first time through that new garage,” he said. “Parking at the Natick Mall has not been without its challenges. So I think there are a lot of people in Framingham and Metro West that are delighted to have a larger garage at Logan Express in Framingham.”

Massport CEO Rich Davey told GBH News the expansion timed perfectly with the reopening of the federal government.

“We are ready to ... make sure that our customers over the coming holiday season will have as a quick, seamless, and hopefully enjoyable travel experience as possible,” Davey said.

The project added three parking garage levels, doubling the garage’s capacity. There are also now new EV chargers and nearly 2,600 solar panels that Davey said will cover half of the building’s energy needs.

Massport is planning to go from running a shuttle every half hour to once every 20 minutes. Logan Express tickets and parking fees will stay at their current prices, Davey said.

The next Logan Express hub up for renovation is the Braintree location, and the agency is seeking proposals to convert the surface lot into a garage facility.

“We’re certainly learning as Logan Airport had the highest number of passengers last year — 44 million people — is that we need to manage our growth. And that includes adding more opportunities for our suburban customers to get to the airport with our bus service,” Davey said.
