A day after right-wing extremists seized the U.S. Capitol in an effort to thwart the finalizing of election results, Boston Mayor Marty Walsh added his voice to the growing chorus calling for President Donald Trump’s second impeachment and early removal from office.

“He has proven, once again, to be incapable of the leadership and the responsibilities of the presidency of the United States of America,” Walsh said of the president Thursday.

Shortly after he spoke, Politico reported that Walsh will be named President-elect Joe Biden's Labor secretary.

Labeling Wednesday as a “dark” one for democracy, Walsh said Vice President Mike Pence and the presidential cabinet should immediately take up the Constitutional removal proceedings.

“I absolutely believe that the president should be removed from office,” Walsh said. “I think the vice president was embarrassed yesterday. He has been a very loyal supporter of the president from the very beginning, and I think yesterday he finally saw the true colors of this man that’s in the White House.”

His comments came just hours after members of Congress wrapped up a marathon election certification session. The typically ceremonial process turned extraordinary Wednesday afternoon when mobs broke through police barricades, triggering an hours-long halt to the certification proceedings as the group rampaged the Capitol complex.

The siege left four dead and more than a dozen arrested before authorities deemed the legislative chambers safe for members to return.

“To witness this type of violence and aggression in response to a fair and legitimate election result certainly was sickening for a lot of us watching yesterday,” Walsh said, going on to label the ordeal as foreseeable.

He now joins the entire Massachusetts congressional delegation in calling for the Trump’s early removal from office.
