Boston Marathon winner Lawrence Cherono beat runner-up Lelisa Desisa by just two seconds on Monday.

Trenni Kusnierek, an anchor and reporter with NBC Sports Boston, told Boston Public Radio Tuesday during a marathon recap that it was one of the closest Boston Marathons ever.

"Every race I have ever covered, there has been a fairly substantial margin between who wins and who comes in second, but for it to be a sprint to the finish, I can't even start to imagine," she said. "It is hard to sprint to the finish after you have run a 5K, let alone 26.185 miles."

The last time the race ended with a two second difference between runners was in 1988. The only year to have a closer finisher was in 2000, when the winner won by less than a second.

"It was really exciting to watch those guys break the tape," Kusnierek said.
