Lilian Calderon Jimenez was just 3 years old when her parents illegally brought her to the U.S. from Guatemala, seeking asylum. Nearly three decades later, she was on the verge of getting permanent resident status when she was arrested, taken from her husband and young children, and held for nearly a month. A week before her hearing, she was released without explanation. The judge on her case has since questioned why she was detained in the first place, noting that it was “part of a pattern.”
