Boston Mayor Marty Walsh has teamed up with Boston Red Sox Manager Alex Cora to travel to Puerto Rico, on a one-day mission to aid Hurricane Maria recovery efforts.
Walsh and Cora arrived at Luiz Munoz Marin International Airport in San Juan Tuesday. Several Red Sox players — including pitchers Rick Porcello and Chris Sale and catcher Christian Vazquez, along with a group of Red Sox ownership officials — made the trip together. JetBlue Airlines delivered 10 tons of supplies to the island on several cargo flights.
Cora is a native of Puerto Rico and lives there during the off-season.
On September 20, 2017, Puerto Rico was devastated by Hurricane Maria, and the damage is ongoing — nearly all residents living near La Mesa Sports Complex in Caguas, where supplies were distributed, remain without power.
Red Sox fans and members of the team ownership made a $200,000 donation to help restore power to the Caguas area.
Walsh and the Red Sox delivered medical supply essentials, vaccines, and water filtration systems. The Red Sox also distributed baseball equipment and athletic gear to about 100 children in the Caguas area.
Puerto Ricans make up 28 percent of Boston's Latino population.
