A record number of people are now registered to vote in Massachusetts.

New enrollment figures from the secretary of state's office show more than 4.5 million registered voters in the state as of Oct. 19.

An early voting period for this year's presidential and state elections began Oct. 24. The election is Nov. 8.

Unenrolled voters — those not affiliated with any political party — remain the majority of the state's electorate. About 54 percent of voters are unenrolled while 34 percent are registered Democrats and less than 11 percent are Republicans.

Two smaller parties, Green-Rainbow and United Independent Party, have less than 1 percent of registrants combined.

Suffolk County has the highest percentage of registered Democrats at 51.6 percent.

Cape Cod has the most registered Republicans at 15.2 percent.
