Nearly 40,000 Verizon employees are on strike, looking for a new contract with the company. The workers have been on the job without a deal for nearly eight months. Verizon employs about 5,000 people here in Massachusetts.

WGBH All Things Considered host Barbara Howard spoke with Professor Thomas Kochan, co-director of the Institute for Work and Employment Research at MIT's Sloan School of Management, about why the workers are striking and what it is they're looking for.
