The University of Massachusetts Audit Committee met behind closed doors Wednesday to discuss an “ongoing investigation into the school’s finances.” The Committee met in a private executive session inside the U-Mass Club high above downtown Boston.
What we do know is that the university’s audit department has been bleeding talent. Over the course of just three months the department lost three high-level employees, and last year it completed just 60 percent of the audits it had agreed to finish.
What we don’t know is what the Committee discussed behind closed doors, between sessions. President Marty Meehan declined to talk about specifics.
When WGBH News asked more about the investigation, and why the board is holding a closed door meeting, Meehan denied it was regarding any investigation, saying “Ahhh… No… It was just about real estate… It’s not an investigation.”
UMass Auditor Kyle David reassured the Committee that turnover hasn’t prevented his department from doing its work adequately.
