Gov. Charlie Baker has signed a bill offering early retirement incentives to thousands of state employees.

The Republican signed the bill within hours of the Democratic-controlled House and Senate, without debate, accepted compromise language that would allow up to 5,000 executive branch employees to apply for early retirement.

The plan is anticipated to save $172 million in personnel costs in the next fiscal year starting July 1.

Some critics have warned that key state agencies could be devastated if waves of highly-experienced workers opt for early retirement.

The measure requires the administration to designate by the end of the week any “critical” positions within state government that would not be eligible for the program.

Those who are eligible can apply between May 11 and June 12.
