WWHD? (That, of course, means: 'What Would Henry VIII Drink?') In honor of the premiere of Wolf Hall, the new Masterpiece Theater miniseries about the life of royal confidante Thomas Cromwell, wine expert Jonathon Alsop of the Boston Wine School joined Boston Public Radio to dish about the vintages most likely to have found their way into King Henry's goblet.
So, in short, what would Henry VIII have drunk? "Whatever he wold have drunk, he would have drunk a lot of it," Alsop said. "Wine in those days was not very transportable, and so there was a lot of sweet wine, because sweet wine has a little bit longer shelf life," he said.
"Anything that would have fed that dude's gout," he continued.
