Boston Mayor Marty Walsh announced today that a protected bike lane will be implemented along a stretch of Commonwealth Avenue that was especially prone to crashes. The bike lane was among a range of changes he announced intended to improve transportation within the city.
Walsh says the bike lane will stretch along Comm Ave from the BU Bridge to Packard’s Corner, a busy stretch where a BU student was killed in 2012.
“Bicyclists have the same rights to be able to ride on the streets and roads as anybody else does,” said Walsh. But it’s very dangerous.”
The mayor says the city is adopting an initiative known as Vision Zero, aimed at eliminating traffic fatalities. He also announced the city will replace its 8,000 parking meters with smarter ones that allow for payment with mobile phones and credit cards. He’s also proposing to pilot an initiative in one Boston neighborhood to stop towing cars for street sweeping, and instead increase the fine to 90 dollars.
