INTERVIEW HIGHLIGHTS

On what exactly Lab Lit is

The term Lab Lit was coined by novelist and scientist Dr. Jennifer Rohn. Lab Lit novels have at least one main character who’s a scientist, and have to describe at least a little of the research that character is pursuing. The trick is to write a compelling human story and get the science and research right. In addition to being really enjoyable reading, Rohn sees Lab Lit books as a means to increase public understanding of and trust in science.

On how Lab Lit is different from Science Fiction

Jenny Rohn says that unlike sci-fi, Lab Lit should adhere to laws of physics and biology as we currently understand them. That means no aliens and no time machines. Lab Lib should also be set in the past or present -- rather than the future -- and is more likely to overlap with historical fiction
