Massachusetts House Speaker Robert DeLeo is pressing his fellow lawmakers to eliminate a rule he initially supported limiting speakers to four two-year terms.
A copy of proposed rules to be debated by lawmakers on Thursday would eliminate an existing rule stating "no member shall hold, for more than eight consecutive years, the office of Speaker of the House."
The proposed rule change was sent to lawmakers Wednesday. A vote is expected Thursday in the House following a closed-door Democratic caucus.
Under the existing rule, Robert DeLeo, elected speaker in 2009, would have to step down in 2017.
DeLeo had pushed for the term limit when he became speaker. The change would allow the Winthrop Democrat to remain speaker as long as he continues to be elected by the chamber.
Said Governor Charlie Baker: "I’m a big believer in letting the House and Senate make their own decision in respect to how they want to manage their affairs. And they’ll make any decision they think is right for them.”
