Among the people who are unlikely to get much rest during the storm are utility workers. Before the first flake of snow fell, a convoy of 18-wheelers loaded with electrical equipment headed across Massachusetts and Rhode Island in an effort to get ahead of the storm.

But as WGBH’s Stephanie Leydon reports, despite their efforts, they are bracing for the possibility of widespread power outages.

In addition to utilities, officials are prepping emergency shelters and getting ready for a mammoth snow removal operation. Ian Bowles, the former Massachusetts secretary of energy and environmental affairs, played a big part in those efforts under Gov. Deval Patrick from 2007 to 2011.
