Today would have been Josephine Gay’s ninth birthday, but two years ago this weekend, she was one of the 20 children killed in the shooting rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown Connecticut.
Shortly after, the Gay family resettled in the Boston area. WGBH News reporter Craig LeMoult recently spoke with Josephine’s mother, Michele Gay, about her efforts to make schools safer.

Following the Sandy Hook shooting, Massachusetts convened a task force on school safety. It issued a final report this July with recommendations to local school districts in four key areas:
The report also calls for state funding to provide local school districts with technical assistance and provide active-shooter training to local police and pay for building safety improvements.
