For nearly 400 years, people have migrated to this part of the world in search of work, sometimes in search of a new home. In her series Home Away From Home, Sarah Reynolds brings together voices and stories of some of the immigrants in our region, looking at why they’ve come here and why they stay.

• Immigration is drastically changing the population of places like Nantucket, where walking downtown any Sunday evening, you’ll hear hymns in Spanish emanating from St. Mary’s, Our Lady of the Isle Catholic Church.

• Reynolds talks to an elderly Portuguese immigrant fighting isolation, with help  from a senior services coordinator with the Immigrants’ Assistance Center in New Bedford.

•  First-generation undocumented immigrants often get torn between two cultures. Reynolds talks to one who calls herself a "hybrid."

• And what happens when undocumented immigrants pay taxes?
