When the self-proclaimed Islamic State – or ISIS – started attracting attention this summer, it was in response to the horrific violence the militant group was waging against Syrian and Iraqi civilians. But now, after the murder a second American hostage – the United States appears locked into a broadening conflict with no clear end in sight.
