The developer of a planned wind farm off Cape Cod is seeking a lease option in Rhode Island for a staging and assembly area.

The Quonset Development Corp. on Wednesday announced Cape Wind is looking at a 1-year lease option at the Quonset Business Park, with two 1-year extensions.

Most of the work for Cape Wind was planned for New Bedford, Massachusetts, at a terminal currently being built. Cape Wind met with Gov. Lincoln Chafee in 2012 about possibly using Rhode Island ports because of uncertainty about when the New Bedford terminal would be completed.

The Quonset board will consider the lease option next week. Spokesman Ted Kresse  says if it's approved, it does not mean Cape Wind will definitely come to Quonset, just that it has the option.
